Getting onto the beach

The nearest mapped vehicle access is Access Road 1A, about 0.2 mi north of marker 20. It comes out by marker 17. The mapped surface is asphalt, sand. From there you drive along the sand to the marker.

What the number means

Beach markers are numbered posts along the dune line, and they are the only reliable way to describe a position on an otherwise featureless beach. Along the Port Aransas stretch they stand every tenth of a mile, counting up as you head south from the jetty. If you need help, the number is what emergency dispatchers ask for — saying “beach marker 20” puts responders within a few hundred feet of you.
