What the number means

Beach markers are numbered posts along the dune line, and they are the only reliable way to describe a position on an otherwise featureless beach. Along the Port Aransas stretch they stand every tenth of a mile, counting up as you head south from the jetty. If you need help, the number is what emergency dispatchers ask for — saying “beach marker 7” puts responders within a few hundred feet of you.
